Validity of Self-Reported Wehgt,Height and Body Mass Index in a Hospital Based Breast Cancer Case-Control Study

Abstract
Background In many epidemiologic studies, researchers use self reported weight and height to assess Body Mass Indw(BUh kg/m). The Vol, of self-reported weight, height and 114 could be affected by age, height obesity and case-control status. We assessed the validity of self-reported weight, height and BMT by comparing them with actual weight height and BMI in a case-control study.
Methods Newly diagnosed cases with breast cancer(y333) and controls with no history of cancer(n=159) were selected from Samsung Medical Center. Self- reported BMI was calculated using self- reported height and weight Actual BMI was calculated using measured height and weight. Data analyses were conducted using Pearsoifs correlation coeEcier1Q, hyst and kappa statistics.
Results Pears & correlation between actual and self reported weight self reported height and BMI were higho>19¢¥ in both cases and controls. The mean difference between actual and self- reported value was 0.33 kg for weight, -0.17 cm for height and amlvjfor BMI in cases. But the difference to ween actual anti OWN us were not significantly different: between cases and controls. Kappa statistics for the agreement between actual and reported NO categories were 0.81 in cases and 0.72 in controls.
Conclusions Self-report weight, height and BMI values are valid for case-control studies.
